This novel was so much fun I finished it in a day. The main character, Scarlett, knows her own mind. She's a strong, likable character with a great sense of humor. I was constantly chuckling over her internal dialogue and pop culture references. At times, Scarlett faces unpleasant choices, but unlike so many YA heroines, she never sinks to angst-filled whining. She strives to do the right thing, even if it's not in her own best interest, but she struggles with those decisions, just as we do in real life.
It's rare not to find "slow parts" in a book, but Dragon Moon has none. There are no boring blocks of exposition to skim over, no annoying info-dumps, so it's easy to be drawn into the story and immersed in Scarlett's adventures. The plot will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next to Scarlett, the dragons and the two warring clans she's trying to bring together.
The "blurb" gives a good sense of Scarlett's personality, and rest assured, the book follows through, delivering a fun-filled adventure with a character you'd love to be friends with in real life.

Scarlett steps into a fortuneteller’s tent, skeptical but curious. She is even more so when the resident gypsy gives her a chain and pendant, telling her to wear it when she goes to sleep. Reluctantly, she does as instructed. Thus begins an epic adventure beyond her imagination.
Ms. Nicholls is a master storyteller. Her characters, both human and dragon, come to life in the pages of this amazing book. As the plot unfolds, there are many moments of laughter, and also tears. I read this book in one sitting, not willing to stop, and I wanted more.
Dragon Moon, a YA fantasy, will captivate you with its scope and timelessness, and I recommend it highly. 5 stars
Dragon Moon by Julie Nicholls was a captivating treat. From the first line of the blurb, I was drawn in to this quirky YA fantasy. “Save the dragons, unite the races, no sweat.”
Scarlett was a breath of fresh air as far as the usual YA characters. She was engaging, intelligent, and had a sense of humor. There were many laugh out loud moments, but there were also several tear jerking ones as well. Dragon Moon is labeled as young adult, but older fantasy lovers would enjoy this novel also.
The way another Nicholls handled some tolerance issues, was fantastic. They were parts of the story and flowed seamlessly throughout the pages.
Can the races be united and the dragons saved? I guess you will have to read and find out. You will not be disappointed. My fingers are crossed for a book 2!
Dragon Moon is one of the best YA novels I have read. It has action, suspense, romance, comedy all rolled into one beautifully written package. The main character Scarlett is funny and snarky yet caring and lovable. This book grabs you from page one and does not let you go. I became completely invested in the story and the people and although the story is complete there is room for a sequel and I would love to see that happen. The Audiobook is beautifully narrated by the lovely voice of Amanda Friday. I could listen to her read all day. I am very picky when it comes to Audiobooks - most are to slow or monotone for me to enjoy, I find my mind drifting, but not with Amanda Friday reading Dragon Moon. I savored every moment and listened intently not wanting to miss a single moment.
I've read an adult fantasy series written by this author and enjoyed it, but I believe Ms. Nicholls is equally adept at writing for a younger audience. However, this book would be entertaining for fantasy lovers of all ages.
Messages of anti-bullying and tolerance are woven skillfully into a plot loaded with adventure and humor. I have to confess though, I had a few teary-eyed moments while reading this book. It got under my skin in an unexpected way. Whether it was that I related to Scarlett's childhood experiences, her snarky sense of humor, or simply that I love the idea of living, fire-breathing dragons, I'm not sure. Maybe it was a combination fo all three. And what could be more adorable than a cave full of baby dragons skittering around? Definitely an "aww" moment.
What i liked best about Dragon Moon was how easily I could visualize the characters and the action. Little thing--Scarlett saluting Elyan, Dizelli's crazy hair, the scene with the dragon poop camouflage--provided vivid mental images. This story would make an amazing animated film. After all, how many more times can we watch Frozen?
I highly recommend this Young Adult fantasy but don't let the genre label fool you. Anyone with an imagination and a love for mythical and legendary creatures will embrace Dragon Moon.
Have you ever had a such a vivid dream you weren't sure where reality ended and the dream began? That's the situation Scarlett is in and to add to the confusion, she's told that the survival of the people around her depends on her! As the only living Dragon Mage, Scarlett is the only one who can communicate with dragons and that turns out to be even more important than anyone knows. Will this confused 19-year-old girl be able to rise to the challenge? You'll have to read to find out! -)
I really enjoyed this story. Scarlett is exactly like many of us at her age, confused, overwhelmed, torn between the child she was and the adult she is becoming. As such, she's incredibly relatable and it's easy to empathize with her as she faces the challenges presented to her, finds her first serious romance, and evolves from girl to woman. This book is a complete story, but it's clear that there are more stories about Scarlett to come. Ms. Nicholls walks the fine line between a cliffhanger, which I hate, and leaving her readers wanting more, which I love. Five stars and I can't wait for the next book!
